Slovenia has been voted as the Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year 2015. The award ward was announced as part of the influential IAGTO Awards, held at the end of International Golf Travel Market, the golf travel industry’s annual trade show. More than 160 members of the International Golf Travel Writers Association took the vote after assessing attractiveness of the region and courses, quality and accessibility of the courses.
Development of golf product paying off
”Slovenia has been working strategically on the golf product for many years now and a reward like this is a confirmation that our work is paying off,” says Marjan Hribar, Director general General of the Directorate of Tourism, Ministry of the Economy of the Republic of Slovenia.
13 golf courses
The country has 13 golf courses. Most of them within an hour's drive from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Golf courses are green, diverse, nature is beautiful. Many offer magnificent mountain views which all makes Slovenia ever more popular as a golf destinations, attracting golfers from all over the world..
The biggest number of foreign golfers come from neighbouring countries Italy and Austria, Germany as well. For the past few years there are a good number of golfers coming from Scandinavia too, in particular Finland and Sweden. Impressions they carry back with them are mostly extremely positive, saying they got more than they expected.
In the last 10 years more than 8 official EGA European Amateur Championships, team and individual were held on Slovenian golf courses, proving golfers will find top quality courses to play here.
